Try the disk utility to backup the drive before you try to reformat the drive.
The problems that you are having with the drive are probably caused by something other than bad sectors
Trying to use a drive that has bad sectors to do a backup would corrupt the boot records or other critical data on the drive. As @DavidPostill noted
